Many cyclists and long-distance runners fall into a “workout rut,” pushing to bike harder and longer, run more miles, and occasionally (maybe) stretch a little afterward. The all too common result is stiff muscles, lack of optimal cycling or running efficiency, and injuries that possibly could have been prevented. Yoga and similar exercises such as Pilates and other core-strengthening exercises can be extremely beneficial to all types of athletes. The fluidity of movement in yoga and Pilates-based stretching and exercise enhances circulation and blood flow throughout the body. Those benefits can reduce recovery time after workouts and may aid in decreasing the risk of injury.
